The property sits on the first lot laid out in Amanda Township, which attracted early Fairfield County pioneers. Thomas J. Barr, a Fairfield County politician, later lived there.","narrative":"Standing on a prominent corner lot in Amanda, Ohio, this house combines two building periods. The rear portion, built in 1840, is a log structure covered in clapboard and set on a limestone foundation. In 1878 a two-story, five-bay Italianate frame front was added, with white clapboard siding, a hipped roof, segmental-arched windows with decorative wooden hoodmolds, ornate brackets under a projecting cornice, and a delicate ornamental porch. Inside are a cherry and oak spiral staircase, an intact gas lighting system with original fixtures, marble fireplaces, wide plank floors and original wood graining. A frame summer kitchen and a double-brick outbuilding, thought to have been used for cold food storage, remain on the grounds. The lot was part of the first tract laid out in Amanda Township and drew early Fairfield County pioneers. Later Thomas J. Barr, a county politician, lived here. The house was recognized as the most outstanding architectural example in the area.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition, with original site and largely unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.258051-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80002995.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002995/ed3ae9816b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002995/ed3ae9816b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sadpine","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barr_House_Amanda,_Ohio.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Sadpine</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barr_House_Amanda,_Ohio.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988209","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137784691"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/fairfield-county/barr-house-80002995/"}
