It is the only remaining building associated with Strong, and the form argues it has major significance for the community's residents.","narrative":"This two-story brick house on the north side of the town commons in Strongsville, Ohio, was built around 1830 for John Stoughton Strong, the town's founder. It is a rectangular block, four bays wide and three deep, set on a local sandstone foundation. Originally Federal in style with stepped gable ends, it was altered probably in the 1870s, when the gables were removed and bracketed eaves were added. Later changes include one-over-one windows and a shed porch. Inside, the rooms have been partitioned into three apartments, though much original woodwork, casings and flooring survives. Strong came to Ohio from Vermont in 1816, bought thousands of acres in the Connecticut Western Reserve, and in 1822 deeded the land for the commons that remains the town center. He also built a tavern, a grist mill, a distillery and an ashery, none of which survive. His house is the only remaining structure tied to his life.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date ca. 1830)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal, altered in the late 19th century","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in good condition; used as a private residence, with interior rooms partitioned into three apartments.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.310055-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80002985.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002985/21eb4d7a10-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002985/21eb4d7a10-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Chris Light","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Strong_House_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Light</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Strong_House_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987885","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137755575"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/strong-john-stoughton-house-80002985/"}
