Its history is tied to the 1917 school closure that led residents to incorporate their own village, first called Euclidville and renamed Lyndhurst in 1920. It also retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, setting, feeling and association.","narrative":"This one-room brick schoolhouse on Richmond Road in Lyndhurst, Ohio, was built in 1866 as Euclid Township District School 4. It has sandstone sills, lintels and above-grade foundations, a gable roof with plain eaves, two entrances flanking a central window on the east end, and four windows along each side. Inside is a single plastered room of roughly 28 by 36 feet with a high ceiling, and the original sash, casings, baseboards and molding survive. The township trustees ordered the school closed in 1917, and residents responded by incorporating a separate village, Euclidville, to control their own school. The school reopened in 1918, and the village was renamed Lyndhurst in 1920. That year a new school was begun on the site and the old building was moved 400 feet south, where it received a full basement. It is described as virtually the only surviving nineteenth century public building in Lyndhurst. The Boy Scouts have used it for decades, and local preservation efforts have restored it since 1974.","period_of_significance":"1866; 1918-1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the school board and in use for school tours, club and community meetings; restored since 1974.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.844686-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80002982.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002982/c9c72cc7ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002982/c9c72cc7ec-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Euclid_District_4_Schoolhouse_in_Lyndhurst.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Euclid_District_4_Schoolhouse_in_Lyndhurst.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987931","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137727172"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/old-euclid-district-4-schoolhouse-80002982/"}
