Pattison Residence, is an Italian Villa style house built 1865-1867 on a wooded tract atop a hill at 906 Goshen Pike in Milford, Clermont County, Ohio.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a well-preserved and locally rare example of the Italian Villa style in Clermont County. It is also associated with John M. Pattison, a Cincinnati insurance executive and politician who served as Ohio's forty-third governor in 1906.","narrative":"Promont is a brick-and-stone Italian Villa style residence built between 1865 and 1867 on a wooded thirteen-acre hilltop in Milford, Ohio. Its notable features include an overhanging cornice with paired, scrolled wooden brackets, smooth sandstone trim, a four-story tower with a spiral staircase, and cast iron balconies. Inside, a center hall and grand stairway are flanked by two rooms on each floor, with fourteen-foot ceilings and original molded woodwork and plaster medallions. The house was built for landholder Andrew McGrew, later sold to race horse promoter John Armstrong, and acquired in 1879 by John M. Pattison, who renamed it Promont. Pattison became president of Union Central Life Insurance Company, served in the Ohio legislature and the U.S. House, and was Ohio's governor in 1906, the only Clermont County native to hold that office. A 1906 newspaper called it the handsomest residence in the county. A similar carriage house on the grounds is deteriorating.","period_of_significance":"1865-1867","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italian Villa","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied private residence; the carriage house is described as rapidly deteriorating.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.348236-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/80002959.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002959/bf76f5b0b0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002959/bf76f5b0b0-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Promont_in_Milford.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Promont_in_Milford.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987136","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promont","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7249855"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/clermont-county/promont-80002959/"}
