It is considered the oldest standing house in town.","why_significant":"The house is a little-altered local interpretation of Greek Revival style, in a raised cottage form with plan and openings suited to a warm climate. It is associated with the locally prominent Dowd and Kennedy families, notably Clement Dowd, a young lawyer who later became a leading Charlotte citizen and U.S. congressman. It may also hold information about 19th-century life.","narrative":"Built around 1850 on what was then the edge of Carthage, this one-story frame house is regarded as the oldest standing house in the town. Chatham County builder Stephen Brewer constructed it for physician Samuel Bruce. It is a Greek Revival raised cottage, set on tall red sandstone piers beneath a broad hip roof, with a full-width porch, a center-hall plan and nine-over-nine windows. Original paint survives under the porch, and later rear and side additions include a kitchen ell and a small doctor's office. The house is best known for Clement Dowd, a young lawyer who married Bruce's daughter in 1857 and lived there until 1862. He later moved to Charlotte, served as mayor, bank president and congressman. In 1863 the property passed to Powell Kennedy, a descendant of the family behind Moore County's well-known gun factories, and stayed with his descendants. It was recognized for its architecture and these local family associations.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Stephen Brewer","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["B","C","D"],"status_note":"Listed as private residence and unoccupied at the time of nomination; condition described as unaltered on its original site, with original paint preserved under the porch.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.015353-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/7214/47721452/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/80002888.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002888/a6a8e4cf9e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002888/a6a8e4cf9e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Cohee","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bruce-Dowd-Kennedy_House_Carthage_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cohee</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bruce-Dowd-Kennedy_House_Carthage_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721452","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce%E2%80%93Dowd%E2%80%93Kennedy_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460701"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/moore-county/bruce-dowd-kennedy-house-80002888/"}
