It is associated with John Price Carr, a businessman and civic leader who helped save Presbyterian Hospital of Charlotte. It also embodies the asymmetrical massing, tower, gables and patterned shingles of early 20th century residential construction.","narrative":"Built in 1904 at North McDowell and East Fifth streets in Charlotte's First Ward, this two-story frame house is a Queen Anne residence with a four-stage shingled tower, projecting gable bays, patterned shingles, a hipped roof with finials and a wraparound porch on paired columns. Inside, the first floor has oak woodwork, including wainscoting, mantels, window seats and built-in cupboards. John Price Carr, a Mecklenburg County native who ran a heavy hauling business, oversaw construction using lumber cut in his home area of Hopewell. He served on the Board of Aldermen and helped guarantee a bank note in 1917 that allowed Presbyterian Hospital to buy a new campus. Carr lived here until his death in 1927, and his widow stayed until the early 1950s. The house later became a boarding house. Urban renewal in the 1960s and 1970s demolished most of the surrounding neighborhood, leaving this house as a rare reminder of its Victorian architecture. A trucking company bought and restored it in 1979 for offices.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Built by John Price Carr, who oversaw construction; no architect named","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Restored for office use; described as in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.340595-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/7212/47721268/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/80002885.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002885/935588c08f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002885/935588c08f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bagatar","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Price_Carr.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bagatar</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Price_Carr.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721268","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Price_Carr_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460859"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/carr-john-price-house-80002885/"}
