It runs along East Broad Street, Elm Street and Davie Avenue and contains 76 buildings dating from about 1880 to 1970.","why_significant":"The district is presented as representative of Statesville neighborhoods that developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries along roads leading into town. It holds many of the city's most ambitious surviving nineteenth-century houses and a range of Victorian, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Tudor and Bungalow styles. It differs from the later, lesser-quality development around it.","narrative":"East of downtown Statesville, a tree-shaded string of streets forms a residential district of 76 buildings. It follows East Broad Street, turns north on Elm Street, and continues east along Davie Avenue to Euclid Avenue. Houses date from about 1880 to 1970, and most were built by 1930. Davie Avenue is described as the most elegant street, and East Broad has a median planted with small trees. Most buildings are frame, and many are simple vernacular versions of period styles. Several are more sophisticated, including the Mott-Simons, J. S. Ramsey and Major W. L. Allison houses, which rank among the most ambitious nineteenth-century houses left in the city. Styles range from Gothic- and Italianate-influenced Victorian designs and Queen Anne houses to Colonial, Tudor and Elizabethan Revival buildings and bungalows. About 80 percent of the properties contribute to the district's character, while four are intrusions, including two apartment complexes from about 1970. The neighborhood grew along roads into town, and later surrounding development was of lesser quality.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian (Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne), Colonial/Neo-Classical Revival, Elizabethan and Tudor Revival, Bungalow","criteria":[],"status_note":"Buildings are generally well preserved and in good or excellent condition; nearly all are occupied, and a few along East Broad Street are adaptively reused for small businesses and offices.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.522189-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/7180/47718053/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/80002869.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002869/b6dd551dda-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002869/b6dd551dda-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EAST_BROAD_STREET-DAVIE_AVENUE_HISTORIC_DISTRICT,_IREDELL_COUNTY,_NORTH_CAROLINA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718053","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Broad_Street%E2%80%93Davie_Avenue_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461473"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/iredell-county/east-broad-street-davie-avenue-historic-district-80002869/"}
