It was built in 1904 by Espy Watts Brawley on part of the family's farm.","why_significant":"The house is regarded as one of the finest Late Victorian houses in south Iredell County and is perhaps the largest house in Mooresville. Its scale reflects the prominence of Espy Watts Brawley, a farmer, manufacturer and banker who was a prime mover of business and industry in early 20th century Mooresville. The nomination also notes its well-preserved state and its Neo-Classical Revival detailing.","narrative":"Built in 1904 on part of the Brawley family farm at the northern edge of Mooresville, North Carolina, this two-and-one-half story frame house was designed and supervised by its owner, Espy Watts Brawley. Its large rectangular plan, slate roof, pedimented cross gables and wraparound one-story porch with a porte-cochere show Late Victorian massing with Neo-Classical Revival touches. The interior has nine open fireplaces, each with a different mantel, and many rooms are pine panelled. Brawley was a farmer, owner or president of two cotton mills, an oil mill, a flour mill, a fertilizer business and a bank, and served on the local school board and as a deacon at First Presbyterian Church. The house is considered the best example of its type in south Iredell County and reflects the town's turn-of-the-century industrial growth.","period_of_significance":"1904","architect_builder":"Espy Watts Brawley (designed, planned and personally supervised construction)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian (Queen Anne) with Neo-Classical Revival detailing","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Well-preserved; the house remains in the Brawley family, owned by the eldest daughter.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.472504-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/65/7180/47718065/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/80002859.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002859/2b9bdc2333-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002859/2b9bdc2333-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ncpappy","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2012-09-28_17-16-41_602_espy_watts_brawley.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ncpappy</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2012-09-28_17-16-41_602_espy_watts_brawley.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718065","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espy_Watts_Brawley_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707920"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/iredell-county/brawley-espy-watts-house-80002859/"}
