Dalton House) is a two-story Greek Revival frame house built in 1858 in rural Eagle Mills township near Houstonville, Iredell County, North Carolina, with log houses, a stone building, and farm outbuildings on a 57-acre farm.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of the most architecturally outstanding in Iredell County, with richly varied Greek Revival detailing on the portico and interior. It was also the seat of John Hunter Dalton, the county's leading tobacco grower and early tobacco manufacturer in the mid-nineteenth century.","narrative":"Daltonia is a two-story frame house completed in 1858 for John Hunter Dalton in rural northeast Iredell County. Its three-bay front is dominated by a pedimented two-story portico with pierced sawnwork posts, a wheat-sheaf balustrade, a decorated lunette, and a fluted-pilaster entry with frosted transom and sidelights. Inside, mantels and doors carry painted graining and marbling, and the mantels show Greek key banding drawn from a pattern book of 1830. The farm retains two log buildings, a dry-laid stone structure once used to season tobacco, dairy barns, and other farm buildings. Dalton grew the largest tobacco crop in the county and in 1860 made 50,000 pounds of plug tobacco in a factory across the road. The house is considered one of the county's finest Greek Revival buildings, and it has stayed with his descendants and remains in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; the house is occupied as a private residence and the land is still farmed. One nearby secondary house is noted as vacant.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.589058-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/7180/47718021/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/80002856.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002856/f8c80aa7ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002856/f8c80aa7ec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Gelcourt2018","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daltonia_Plantation,_a_Greek_Revival_frame_home,_built_in_1858_in_Houstonville_Iredell_County_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Gelcourt2018</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daltonia_Plantation,_a_Greek_Revival_frame_home,_built_in_1858_in_Houstonville_Iredell_County_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718021","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daltonia","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20202655"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/iredell-county/daltonia-80002856/"}
