It includes 32 significant buildings among 62 on the campus.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that the complex is an important grouping of Adirondack vernacular resort architecture in a scenic setting, using rustic design and native materials. It preserves the atmosphere of early Adirondack resort life and has been used continuously as a YMCA conference center since 1904. It also survives intact despite the loss of similar buildings elsewhere in the region.","narrative":"Silver Bay Association Complex is a campus of about ninety-seven acres on the northwest shore of Lake George, where sixty-two buildings are arranged informally along wooded slopes between the lake and Route 9N. Thirty-two of them, built between 1880 and 1925, are considered significant. Development began around 1880, when John J. Wilson opened a small hotel and steamboat landing. Silas H. Paine, a Standard Oil executive, bought the hotel in 1899 and expanded it. YMCA and YWCA conferences began there in 1902, and the Silver Bay Association bought the hotel and 1,000 acres in 1904. The buildings include the large shingled Inn, a rustic auditorium, the granite Hughes Memorial Chapel, and many cottages and dormitories using peeled logs, half-timbering, shingles and fieldstone. A 1910 conference here helped consolidate several youth programs into the Boy Scouts of America. The complex is valued as a rare survivor of Adirondack resort architecture.","period_of_significance":"1880-1925","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Adirondack vernacular resort architecture, rustic style, with Queen Anne style elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in use as a YMCA conference center and recreation facility; condition listed as good and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.234716-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002785.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002785/2ca18aa986-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002785/2ca18aa986-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SIlver_Bay_Inn.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SIlver_Bay_Inn.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322805","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Bay_Association_Complex","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7515834"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/warren-county/silver-bay-association-complex-80002785/"}
