It is also an unusual example of early twentieth century civic architecture in the region, notable for its austere simplicity, massive size and two-color brick detailing. It was the last grand civic structure built in Addison.","narrative":"Addison Village Hall is a four-story greyish-brown brick building at the corner of Tuscarora and South Streets, at the foot of Main Street. Its projected center pavilion, flanked by two-story wings, holds a large arched entrance, and reddish-brown brick laid in a quoin-like pattern frames the windows and corners. The building came out of two needs: the village wanted a hall, and the local Oddfellows wanted a meeting hall with an opera house. They combined their projects in 1906 to share costs, and construction finished in 1907. The village offices occupied the first floor, an opera house the second, and the Oddfellows the third, with a carriage room later serving the fire department. Original pressed metal ceilings, the auditorium stage and balcony, and the ornate Oddfellows Hall survive inside. A belfry was removed in 1958. The hall was the last grand civic structure built in Addison and reflects the community's active political and social life in the early twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"1906","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular design showing lingering influence of the 19th-century Italianate style (per reviewer notes)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Village offices, fire department and Oddfellows moved out in 1979; a CETA program then occupied the first floor and occasionally used the auditorium and stage.
