It was also the focal point of local educational and cultural efforts in a small rural community. It is the oldest library building in Putnam County, and its original interior fittings and furniture survive intact.","narrative":"Reed Memorial Library is a one-story, trapezoidal stone building at a busy crossroads in Carmel, Putnam County, facing Lake Gleneida. Built in 1913-14, it has rock-faced masonry, a slate gabled roof, quoined leaded-glass windows and a rounded rear section holding the reading rooms and stacks. Inside, an oval oak-panelled lobby opens to the reading rooms, which have carved or Gothic Revival mantels and Arts and Crafts furnishings. Mrs. Arietta Crane Reed gave the building in memory of her husband, William B. Reed, a Carmel native and senior partner in a New York City construction company. It replaced a library collection that had moved among homes, a church and an office building since 1868. The architects, Gaylor & Pryor, planned it as both a library and a community meeting place. It is considered one of the area's best Tudor Revival buildings, the oldest library building in the county, and it has kept its original fixtures and furniture.","period_of_significance":"1913-14","architect_builder":"Gaylor & Pryor, architects; Miller-Reed Construction Co., contractors","architectural_style":"Tudor Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, occupied, and unaltered since construction; it remains in its original setting and retains its original decorative features and furnishings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.270211-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002749.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002749/1717c4676a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002749/1717c4676a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reed_Memorial_Library,_Carmel,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reed_Memorial_Library,_Carmel,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321046","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reed_Memorial_Library","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7306674"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/putnam-county/reed-memorial-library-80002749/"}
