It recalls the lavish scale of late 19th-century life among wealthy New Yorkers. It is also an important work of the architectural firm Kimball & Thompson.","narrative":"Standing at Madison Avenue and East 72nd Street, this four-and-one-half-story limestone mansion was built between 1895 and 1898 for Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo. Architects Kimball & Thompson modeled it on the 16th-century chateaux of the Loire Valley, with carved balustrades, canopied niches holding statuettes of saints, tall stone dormers and chimneys, and red roofs accented in copper. Mrs. Waldo never lived in the house, and it sat empty for well over a decade. A foreclosure followed in 1912, and antique dealers first occupied it in 1920. Later owners included a neighboring church, which bought it in 1971. The ground floor has been altered for shops, while the second floor keeps its plaster moldings and walnut parquet. It is listed as one of the few surviving chateau-style residences on the Upper East Side and as a reminder of the palatial scale on which wealthy New Yorkers lived in the late 19th century.","period_of_significance":"1895-1898","architect_builder":"Kimball & Thompson","architectural_style":"Neo-French Renaissance","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; ground floor altered for shops, art auctioneers on the second floor, and the second-floor interior retains much original detail.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.507055-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002727.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002727/670123956b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002727/670123956b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Beyond My Ken","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gertrude_Rhinelander_Waldo_House_867_Madison_Avenue.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond My Ken</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gertrude_Rhinelander_Waldo_House_867_Madison_Avenue.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84002803","name":"Upper East Side Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/upper-east-side-historic-district-84002803/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320039","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gertrude_Rhinelander_Waldo_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7320574"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/waldo-gertrude-rhinelander-mansion-80002727/"}
