Charles Follen McKim was principal designer of the 1894 facade, one of his first essays in Georgian style, and of the 1903 addition with Harvard Hall. The 1915 wing by William Kendall was designed to respect the original design.","narrative":"Midtown Manhattan holds a Georgian Revival clubhouse at 27 West 44th Street, built for a Harvard alumni club in three phases. The original three-story section of 1894 has a red brick facade with limestone trim, a projecting center bay, paired Ionic columns and a carved Harvard shield. In 1903 an addition reached through the block to 45th Street and added Harvard Hall, a three-story oak-paneled room, and a main dining room. A six-story wing of 1915 nearly doubled the club's size and repeated the 44th Street design. McKim, Mead & White designed the whole complex, with Charles Follen McKim leading the first two stages and partner William Kendall the third. The style adapts American colonial forms and recalls eighteenth-century Harvard buildings. Contemporary writers praised the first building as one of McKim's minor masterpieces. Although the exterior is austere, the interior is richly finished, with a grand staircase, a grill room and large fireplaces. The club, organized in 1865, owns and occupies the building today.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 and 1900- (specific dates 1894, 1903, 1915)","architect_builder":"McKim, Mead & White","architectural_style":"Georgian Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied, in excellent condition, altered; still used as a club.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.230573-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002693.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002693/62e890cfdf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002693/62e890cfdf-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jim.henderson at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harvardcny.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson at en.wikipedia</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harvardcny.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319584","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_Club_of_New_York_City","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5676326"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/harvard-club-of-new-york-city-80002693/"}
