Its corner tower and ornate red brick and light-colored terra-cotta facade with Gothic detail make it among the most important surviving early 20th-century apartment houses. It was among the earliest luxury apartment buildings on the Upper East Side.","narrative":"Rising ten stories at the northeast corner of Madison Avenue and East 66th Street in Manhattan, this apartment house was built in 1906-08 for Charles F. Rogers of the Parkview Real Estate Company and designed by the firm of Harde & Short. Its red brick walls are trimmed with light-colored terra-cotta carved in Gothic motifs, including canopies with ogee arches, crockets, finials and tracery, and a full-height corner tower joins the Madison Avenue and 66th Street facades. The style recalls the early French Renaissance. When completed it held two apartments per floor, and it was among the earliest luxury apartment buildings in a neighborhood then dominated by rowhouses. The ground floor was remodeled for shops in 1929, and between 1948 and 1953 most floors were subdivided, bringing the total to thirty-four apartments. The tower design was later repeated in the firm's Alwyn Court. The building is valued as a distinctive survivor of early luxury apartment living in the city.","period_of_significance":"1906-1908","architect_builder":"Harde & Short","architectural_style":"Neo-French Renaissance with Gothic ornament","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; ground floor converted to commercial use and upper floors divided into thirty-four apartments; condition listed as excellent but altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.500258-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002674.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002674/475ec92a80-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002674/475ec92a80-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:45_East_66th_Street.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:45_East_66th_Street.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84002803","name":"Upper East Side Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/upper-east-side-historic-district-84002803/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319335","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/45_East_66th_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16559140"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/building-at-45-east-66th-street-80002674/"}
