The original Greek Revival stone farmhouse was built in 1842 and enlarged in 1895.","why_significant":"The house is argued to have historical and architectural significance. The farm is tied to the earliest settlement of Nelliston through the Walrath family ferry, which operated by 1760. The 1895 Second Empire remodelling was unusual in a village where the Italianate style dominated. The intact stone summer kitchen and smokehouse is a rare survival.","narrative":"Overlooking the railroad tracks and the Mohawk River at the western edge of Nelliston, this house began as a one-and-a-half story Greek Revival farmhouse of cut stone, built in 1842 with a full-height wooden portico. In 1895 a frame, shingled second story with a mansard roof and round-headed dormers was added, and a new mansard-style porch replaced the portico. The result is an unusual Second Empire remodelling in a village where Italianate buildings prevailed. The farm has been occupied since before 1760, when early Walraths ran a ferry and blacksmith shop near the river. Later the house served a Fort Plain hatter and furniture manufacturer and then the businessman Clark Wagner. Outbuildings include two barns, a latticed well house, and a stone summer kitchen and smokehouse with an unaltered interior, including a fireplace with a crane and a creosote-blackened attic with hooks. The property was listed for its local historical and architectural importance.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival with Second Empire addition","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owners have been restoring the house and live in it.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.386453-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002659.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002659/06b687d8b6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002659/06b687d8b6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"John the Addictive","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_walrath-van_horne_house_in_November_2017.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John the Addictive</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_walrath-van_horne_house_in_November_2017.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313696","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walrath-Van_Horne_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7963749"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/montgomery-county/walrath-van-horne-house-80002659/"}
