It is also significant for the architectural integrity of its Federal style design, including its symmetrical elevations, fanlight entrance, stepped gables and varied mantelpieces. The form rates its significance as local.","narrative":"Riga Academy is a two-story common bond brick building at a crossroads in the hamlet of Riga, southwest of Rochester. Local tavern keeper Joseph Thompson built it in 1811 to replace his earlier frame tavern across the road, and it served as a stop on the Canandaigua-Batavia stage line until 1845, when railroad competition ended that traffic. The building was then bought for a private academy, chartered in 1846 and opened in 1847 with 155 boys and girls. Greek Revival wings were added in 1849 and 1850, and the school closed in 1861. Later owners used it as a residence, and the wings were removed. The Federal design has a five-bay facade, a fanlighted entrance with sidelights, stepped gables with paired chimneys, and a central hall plan. Seven original fireplaces include distinctive mantelpieces, among them Adamesque and pellet-moulded examples. It is valued for its architectural integrity and its place in local history as tavern, school and home.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Joseph Thompson (builder)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; undergoing restoration toward its original condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.941891-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002653.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002653/8178f21b8b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002653/8178f21b8b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DanielPenfield","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RigaAcademyFrontView.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanielPenfield</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RigaAcademyFrontView.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318916","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riga_Academy","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7333321"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/riga-academy-80002653/"}
