It was closely tied to early nineteenth-century stage routes and the Erie Canal, and served as a western terminus stop for two years in the 1820s. The building also shows an evolution from Federal to Greek Revival design.","narrative":"Built about 1818 as a stop on the stage route through the Irondequoit Valley, this inn at Bushnell's Basin in Perinton grew with the Erie Canal. For two years the hamlet was the canal's western terminus, and the tavern, known as the West End of the Canal Tavern, served packet boat and stage coach passengers and housed laborers building the Great Embankment. In the 1830s it was extended east, given a frame second floor and attic, and fitted with two-story porches in the Greek Revival manner. Gould and Elias Richardson ran it from the late 1820s to the late 1830s, and their name stuck. It operated as a hotel until 1917, then became apartments, and was abandoned in 1972. A 1978 restoration, with new rubble and clapboard wings, led to its reopening as a restaurant in 1979. It is described as the last Erie Canal inn in the state still standing on canal waters.","period_of_significance":"1818-1820's","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal and Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in 1978 and opened as a restaurant in 1979, after being abandoned in 1972; two new wings were added for kitchen and bar use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.172804-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002652.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002652/aa77713900-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002652/aa77713900-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RICHARDSON%27S_TAVERN.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318914","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richardson%27s_Canal_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7330305"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/richardsons-tavern-80002652/"}
