It sits on a seven-acre remnant of the original thirty-acre farm.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the four best surviving examples of domestic Second Empire architecture in Monroe County. Of Fairport's two outstanding examples of the style, it keeps greater site and design integrity. It is also an unusual interpretation of a farmhouse built in this formal style.","narrative":"Built in 1873 at 187 South Main Street in Fairport, this Second Empire house began as the center of a thirty-acre farm. Hiram Wilbur, a successful contractor who became superintendent of section 11 of the Erie Canal, built the sixteen-room residence for a household of nine family members and two servants. The white-painted brick house has three sections, with a two-story tower, slate mansard roofs in fish-scale and octagonal patterns, cast-iron cresting, and round-arched windows with keystones. Inside, it keeps a black marble fireplace, the original main staircase, and plaster ceiling medallions. From 1937 it served as a boarding school for children with developmental disabilities that gained a national reputation, and it returned to private use in 1952. Only seven acres remain, but the carriage barn, mature trees and lawns preserve much of its setting. It was listed as one of the best surviving Second Empire houses in Monroe County.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Hiram Wilbur (builder, a contractor)","architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, well maintained, and used as a private residence; the house retains a high level of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.659629-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002651.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002651/05cbb1ec79-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002651/05cbb1ec79-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wilbur_House,_Fairport_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wilbur_House,_Fairport_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318977","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilbur_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8000206"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/wilbur-house-80002651/"}
