It sits on 2.6 acres with a barn and gazebo.","why_significant":"The nomination holds that the house is a superb, largely unaltered example of Gothic Revival principles of antiquity and domesticity, designed by Alexander Jackson Davis. It is also tied to Oneida's early history, since the Higinbotham family were prominent and the house held the city's first bank. It is one of few surviving Davis works in upstate New York.","narrative":"Cottage Lawn, at 435 Main Street in Oneida, is a two-story Gothic Revival cottage of brick finished in earth-colored stucco scored to imitate stone. Alexander Jackson Davis designed it in 1849 for Niles Higinbotham, son of the man regarded as Oneida's founder. Distinctive features include Tudor arches on the veranda, quatrefoil columns, diamond-paned casement windows, sawn vergeboards and crocketed finials. Inside, much of the original wood graining, mantels, plaster ceiling medallions and hardware survive. A bank vault was added in 1851, and Oneida's first bank opened there that December, operating at the house until 1865. A hexagonal gazebo and a board-and-batten barn also stand on the 2.6-acre grounds. Only two owners held the property: the Higinbotham family until 1931, then the Madison County Historical Society, which has kept it with little change. Its intact design and its link to Oneida's early economy were the reasons for its listing.","period_of_significance":"1849 - 1851","architect_builder":"Alexander Jackson Davis","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the Madison County Historical Society, occupied, and used as its museum and headquarters; condition listed as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.019615-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002650.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"83001705","name":"Main-Broad-Grove Streets Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/main-broad-grove-streets-historic-district-83001705/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318708","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cottage_Lawn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5175523"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/madison-county/cottage-lawn-80002650/"}
