It is also described as a sophisticated yet conservative example of rural vernacular New York architecture, combining Federal exterior forms with Greek Revival interior features. It is called the finest and most architecturally significant residence in Lima.","narrative":"Hillcrest is a brick residence on a four-acre knoll above West Main Street, half a mile west of the center of Lima, in Livingston County, New York. Erastus Clark, a dry goods partner and an early trustee of the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, began construction in 1838, and the house was finished in 1840. Its exterior is mostly Federal, with stepped gables, linked chimneys and gable fanlights, while the finest Greek Revival features appear inside, including double parlors with grained doors and deeply cut moldings. Later owners left their marks. Edward F. Dibble added the semicircular Ionic portico and restored the roof balustrade around 1902-1903, and he remodeled the kitchen as a Romanesque-style dining room. A carriage barn of hand-hewn oak and a reconstructed gazebo remain on the grounds. The house reflects the farm wealth of the Genesee Valley and Lima's role as a center of learning in nineteenth-century western New York.","period_of_significance":"1838-1840, 1902-1903","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Combination of Federal and Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in use as a private residence; condition marked good and altered, on its original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.462733-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002648.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002648/b1cd9cde61-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002648/b1cd9cde61-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hillcrest_Lima_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hillcrest_Lima_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318657","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillcrest_(Lima,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706371"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/hillcrest-80002648/"}
