The main house, built in 1850 by Aaron Barber II, combines Greek Revival Doric details with an Italianate hipped roof and balustrade. Nearby stand Greek Revival outbuildings and three large Italianate barns added by his son, Aaron Barber III, who also built two tenant houses around 1870 and 1890. An earlier cobblestone house of the 1830s, mixing Federal and Greek Revival features, and the Hartwell house are the oldest buildings. The Barbers expanded the farm through wheat production and later a herd of short-horned cattle. The Mulligan family bought it in 1920 and in 1930 hired architect Herbert Stern to remodel the main house sympathetically. The farm is notable for its architectural variety, its intact nineteenth-century character, and its continued agricultural use within an unspoiled rural landscape.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Aaron Barber II; Aaron Barber III; Herbert Stern (1930 remodeling)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival, Cobblestone, Italianate and late nineteenth-century eclectic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Active working farm in excellent condition; residential buildings are occupied by people associated with the farm.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.894434-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002647.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002647/b9c1829bde-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002647/b9c1829bde-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barber-Mulligan_Farm_Aug_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barber-Mulligan_Farm_Aug_10.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318614","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barber%E2%80%93Mulligan_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4859577"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/barber-mulligan-farm-80002647/"}
