It combines the austere round-arched early Romanesque Revival form with elaborate classical ornament, a synthesis rarely seen. The design by architect George Penchard produced one of the most unusual of Brooklyn's churches.","narrative":"Occupying a conspicuous corner site in downtown Brooklyn, this brick church at 88 Hanson Place was built between 1857 and 1860 for the Hanson Place Baptist Church, an outgrowth of the Atlantic Street Baptist Church organized in 1854. Architect George Penchard gave it a round-arched Romanesque Revival form, then added classical details: a pedimented portico with four Corinthian columns, corner pavilions, and brick Corinthian pilasters along the side facade. Inside, the semicircular seating plan and horseshoe-shaped balcony on cast-iron colonettes follow the model of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights, and the original pews remain. Round-arched churches suited dissenting Protestant sects that wanted open interiors where every worshipper could see and hear the preacher. The unusual blend of styles is why the building was listed. It has been owned by the Hanson Place Seventh Day Adventists since 1963, and remains in good condition.","period_of_significance":"1857-1860","architect_builder":"George Penchard","architectural_style":"Early Romanesque Revival combined with classical ornament","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in religious use; exterior described as well maintained and interior recently refurbished and painted.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.277834-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002631.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002631/6d6ee0927d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002631/6d6ee0927d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Beyond My Ken","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hanson_Place_Seventh_Day_Adventist_Church_front_and_side.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond My Ken</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hanson_Place_Seventh_Day_Adventist_Church_front_and_side.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318409","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanson_Place_Seventh-day_Adventist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5651217"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/brooklyn/hanson-place-seventh-day-adventist-church-80002631/"}
