It covers the Reed Street block, one house on Ely Street, and short sections of Mansion and River Streets, with most buildings dating from the mid-nineteenth century.","why_significant":"The district is argued to have historic significance as a surviving mid-nineteenth century mercantile row beside a former Hudson River landing that was once Coxsackie's principal dock area. It also has architectural significance for its largely intact Italianate brick commercial buildings, cast-iron storefront columns, and a few earlier Federal buildings. The nomination says it retains more mercantile buildings with architectural integrity than most other Hudson River communities of the period.","narrative":"Reed Street in Coxsackie is a block of two- and three-story brick commercial buildings beside the Hudson River, once the site of a busy dock known as Reed's Landing. The district includes thirty-two buildings on Reed Street, one house on Ely Street, and parts of Mansion and River Streets. Most are Italianate storefronts with paired brackets, wide friezes, hood molds and, in some cases, cast-iron columns added late in the century. Three attached Federal residences, one now a library, and an early warehouse with iron loft doors represent the earlier period. Fires in the 1850s led to rebuilding on the north side of the street, which explains its uniform appearance. By 1867 the area was almost completely developed, and a fire house was added in 1872. Little has changed since the early 1880s. The district was listed for its historic role in river trade and for the architectural integrity of its commercial buildings.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate (predominant), with Federal and Greek Revival buildings","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied, in commercial and private residential use; some storefronts have been remodeled and a modern post office was added in 1962, but the district is largely unchanged since the early 1880s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.339946-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002621.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002621/1d69d437a8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002621/1d69d437a8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reed_Street_Historic_District_Jul_08.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reed_Street_Historic_District_Jul_08.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318037","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reed_Street_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7306698"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/reed-street-historic-district-80002621/"}
