Completed in 1853, it replaced an earlier church of 1724 that was demolished. The facade has a pair of wooden Doric columns in antis, brick pilasters, a plain entablature and a denticulated pediment, topped by a two-stage square tower with a simple wooden cross on the belfry. Long rectangular windows run along the north and south walls, while the western windows have been bricked in. Inside, the plain rectangular room has a simple altar, four stained-glass windows and a late nineteenth-century tin ceiling, the most outstanding feature. The congregation was organized in 1704 at Loonenburg, later Athens, and is described as one of the oldest Lutheran churches in the nation. Its first minister, Justus Falkner, was the first ordained by the Lutheran Church in America. Land for the first church was deeded by three Van Loon family members.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in religious use, with unrestricted public access.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.878059-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002620.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002620/922dcb426b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002620/922dcb426b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RobertDrake2015","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zion_Lutheran_Chutch_6-25-2016.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RobertDrake2015</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zion_Lutheran_Chutch_6-25-2016.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313078","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zion_Lutheran_Church_(Athens,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8072532"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/zion-lutheran-church-80002620/"}
