It was built in two stages in the eighteenth century, between 1725 and 1750 and again about 1772.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that it is a largely intact example of an eighteenth-century Dutch Hudson Valley stone farmhouse. It keeps unusual decorative features, including fielded panelling, a tiger maple stair rail and a granary door. It is one of only about six stone houses remaining in the town of Red Hook and one of the most intact in the mid-Hudson Valley.","narrative":"Set on the north side of West Kerley Corner Road near Red Hook, this fieldstone farmhouse with brick gable ends reflects Dutch building traditions of the Hudson Valley. It began between 1725 and 1750 as a simple two-room dwelling with a fireplace at each end. About 1772 Peter Heermance enlarged it, added an eastern room and installed most of the interior detailing. Standout features include fielded panelling around an east-wall fireplace, closets with arched doors, a steep staircase with a tiger maple rail, and a granary door on the second floor. The land came out of the Schuyler Patent but became a freehold farm early in the 1700s, unlike most nearby tenant-held land. Later owners kept it as a working farm. A wooden rear ell was rebuilt in 1953, and restoration in the 1970s aimed to preserve its eighteenth-century character. Only about six stone houses survive in the town, and this is among the most intact in the region.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Eighteenth-century Dutch Hudson Valley vernacular stone farmhouse","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence on a working farm; described as in good condition after restoration work in the 1970s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.830335-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002604.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002604/1d1020fbf3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002604/1d1020fbf3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Heermance_Farmhouse,_Red_Hook,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Heermance_Farmhouse,_Red_Hook,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317360","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heermance_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5698125"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/heermance-farmhouse-80002604/"}
