It combines a 1740 kitchen wing built by William Prendergast with a Federal style main block added between 1810 and 1820.","why_significant":"The house is tied to the early settlement of Pawling and served as George Washington's headquarters beginning in September 1778. It also holds a rare surviving 1740 vernacular kitchen wing and one of the finer five-bay Federal style houses in Dutchess County. It is further linked to anti-rent leader William Prendergast and to the Loyalist merchant John Kane.","narrative":"On about two acres southeast of Pawling, New York, this house joins two buildings from different eras. The oldest part is a one-and-a-half-story kitchen wing built in 1740 by William Prendergast, who later led the 1766 anti-rent uprising in Dutchess County. John Kane, an Irish-born merchant, bought the property in 1756 and expanded it, but lost it in 1777 after siding with the British. In September 1778 General George Washington used the house as his headquarters for a few months. Between 1810 and 1820 a later owner removed Kane's additions and attached the present two-story, five-bay Federal style house, which has a detailed central doorway, a Palladian window, a Greek Revival portico and carved marble and wood mantels. The surviving kitchen wing is a rare example of pre-1750 vernacular building in the county. Outbuildings include a carriage barn, woodshed and smokehouse.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799 (specific dates 1740; 1810-1820)","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Federal style (Neoclassical detailing) main block; vernacular 1740 kitchen wing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; condition listed as good and altered, with considerable architectural integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.274105-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002603.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002603/e531e7a190-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002603/e531e7a190-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Kane_House_oblique_view.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Kane_House_oblique_view.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317384","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kane_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1534135"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/kane-john-house-80002603/"}
