It is also one of the few good surviving examples of an early nineteenth-century farm dwelling in Bronx County. The surrounding park is included for its rural setting.","narrative":"Poe Cottage is a small frame farmhouse of one and a half stories, built about 1812 by John Wheeler in what was then the rural Westchester village of Fordham. Edgar Allan Poe moved there with his dying wife, Virginia, hoping the quiet countryside would help her health. During his residence he wrote some of his finest work, including The Bells, Annabel Lee and Ulalume, and the essay Eureka. The cottage was moved back from the Grand Concourse in 1896 when the road was widened, then relocated in 1913 to its present site in Poe Park after the city bought it. A porch, steps and a brick foundation were added then, and the interior was restored in 1921. Original features include the hand-hewn roof beams, plank floors, staircase and fireplace. It is also one of the few surviving vernacular farm cottages in the Bronx, and the park gives it a setting reminiscent of its rural surroundings. It operates as a house museum.","period_of_significance":"c. 1812","architect_builder":"John Wheeler","architectural_style":"Vernacular early nineteenth-century frame farmhouse","criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained by the Bronx Historical Society as a historic house museum; owned by the City of New York; basement contains a caretaker's apartment.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.558149-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002588.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002588/d286c86e74-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002588/d286c86e74-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Zoirusha at English Wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgar_Allan_Poe%27s_house_in_the_Bronx.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Zoirusha at English Wikipedia</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edgar_Allan_Poe%27s_house_in_the_Bronx.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316501","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Allan_Poe_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2998596"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/the-bronx/poe-cottage-80002588/"}
