The William Briggs homestead reflects the wealth the milling business produced. The largely intact vernacular buildings keep their rural creekside setting and crossroads character.","narrative":"Alcove is a small crossroads community in southeastern Albany County, New York, strung along the Hannacrois Creek. Originally called Stephensville, it was settled about 1790 by Casparus Ackerman and Archibald Stephens and grew around water-powered industry, including a grist mill, flax mill, paper mill, saw mill and a carding and cloth mill. The district of roughly 14 acres preserves a country store with post office, a brick homestead built between 1820 and 1854 for William S. Briggs, a three-and-a-half-story cut stone Federal-style building with stepped gables, several modest Greek Revival-influenced houses, and an Italianate reservoir station moved when the reservoir was created. The Briggs house is considered the most impressive structure and reflects the wealth the mills produced. Nineteenth-century buildings survive largely intact beside the creek that gave the village its reason for being. Remains of mill foundations along the banks have not been surveyed.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival and vernacular nineteenth-century styles, with Italianate features on the reservoir station","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is rated excellent, good and fair, with some altered buildings. The Briggs homestead has been restored, one building is used as apartments, and the store also houses the post office. The form states there are no modern intrusions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.829115-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/80002582.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002582/7307ca363f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80002582/7307ca363f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Briggs_House_Alcove_Historic_District_May_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Briggs_House_Alcove_Historic_District_May_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316159","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcove_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4713373"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/albany-county/alcove-historic-district-80002582/"}
