It also shows the brief prosperity (1810-34) that the Boston-Worcester Turnpike brought to the area before the railroad shifted the town center south.","narrative":"Standing beside Route 9 in Westborough, this two-story Federal style house was built in two stages between 1820 and 1826. Nathan Fisher bought the land in 1820 and is thought to have built the eastern section around 1822. The western third was added, presumably as a shop, and by 1826 Fisher and his brother-in-law Joseph Lothrop had opened the town's first store there. A thread factory on the property later became the first place in Westborough to use steam power. The house has a hip roof with monitor, clapboard siding, granite foundations and two fanlit entries. Its location reflects the prosperity that followed the opening of the Boston-Worcester Turnpike in 1810, a period that faded after the railroad arrived in 1834 and moved the town center southward. In 1884 the Commonwealth bought the house for the Lyman School, which used it as staff housing. It is now only partly occupied and shows signs of deterioration.","period_of_significance":"1820-1826","architect_builder":"Builder unknown","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Only a portion of the house is occupied; the form describes the building as deteriorated, with some shutters deteriorated beyond repair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.883318-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/7972/63797270/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80001679.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001679/13b4c29678-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001679/13b4c29678-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nathan_Fisher_House,_Westborough,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nathan_Fisher_House,_Westborough,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797270","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Fisher_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715748"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/fisher-nathan-house-80001679/"}
