It is also one of only three houses in Metamora identified by the Illinois Historic Structures Survey as architecturally significant, and one of the two finest Federal style examples in Woodford County.","narrative":"Built around 1840 by George Lemon, this austere two-story house at 104 West Walnut Street in Metamora stands a block south of the village square on a corner lot. Its walls are made of locally produced \"faded pink\" brick, and its hipped roof carries four chimneys, though the house was heated by Franklin stoves rather than fireplaces. Decoration is confined to the Federal style entryway, with a four-panel door, pilasters, sidelights and a transom. Inside, eight rooms are arranged identically on two floors. Adlai E. Stevenson I, a lawyer on Illinois' Eighth Judicial Circuit, brought his bride to the house in 1866 and lived there until 1869, serving on the village board. He later served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as vice-president under Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897. The state historic structures survey also ranks the house among the finest Federal style buildings in Woodford County.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1840; 1866-1869","architect_builder":"George Lemon","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as fair; occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:34.639278-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/8944/28894439/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/80001427.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001427/999b528391-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001427/999b528391-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adlai_E._Stevenson_I_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adlai_E._Stevenson_I_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894439","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adlai_E._Stevenson_I_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24061410"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/woodford-county/stevenson-adlai-e-i-house-80001427/"}
