It was built in 1874 by builder Archie Moody.","why_significant":"It is the only governmental landmark in Campton Township and has served continuously as a polling place and civic meeting place. It was among the first town halls in Kane County, which was unusual at a time when most townships met in schools. A preservation effort in the 1970s saved it from abandonment.","narrative":"Campton Town Hall is a modest white clapboard meeting house of about 20 by 30 feet, standing on a half-acre lot west of Wasco in Kane County, Illinois. Builder Archie Moody completed it in 1874 after township citizens voted to erect a hall of their own. At the time most townships simply used schoolhouses for town meetings, so the building was considered unusual and was among the first town halls in the county. It rests on a river stone foundation and holds a single large room with original pine flooring, wainscotting, 16 painted benches and two tables. It has served as a polling place and a gathering spot for civic groups. A 1935 rededication added a plaque on a boulder. In 1975 it faced abandonment for lack of heat and sanitary facilities, and a local group raised money for a furnace, a rear shed addition, new wiring and restoration work.","period_of_significance":"1874","architect_builder":"Archie Moody, Builder","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in the 1970s except for interior decorating; described as in continuous service as a polling and meeting place, with the form also marking it unoccupied.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.794515-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/8932/28893228/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/80001378.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001378/4fe9fa9083-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001378/4fe9fa9083-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Campton_Town_Hall.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Campton_Town_Hall.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893228","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campton_Town_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5028583"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/kane-county/camptown-town-hall-80001378/"}
