Its bricks came from the Hallett Brickyard, an early local business. The house is three bays wide, with a full-width one-story porch, a low broad cupola, symmetrical side bays and double brackets under the cornices. Inside, a central stair hall with a cherry balustrade separates two large rooms, and a rear wing holds the dining room, kitchen and a smoke house with a large fireplace. Jacob Emmert was the builder. The house is also tied to Nathaniel Halderman (1811-1880), who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1841 and helped build the mill that began the settlement of Mount Carroll. He helped lay out the town, supported moving the county seat there, became its first mayor and served as County Treasurer for twelve years.","period_of_significance":"1854","architect_builder":"Jacob Emmert, builder","architectural_style":"Early Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition, with few alterations; used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.591065-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/74/8917/28891774/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/80001339.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001339/78c6510e0d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001339/78c6510e0d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NATHANIAL_HALDERMAN_HOUSE.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891774","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathaniel_Halderman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20639172"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/carroll-county/halderman-nathaniel-house-80001339/"}
