It reads as a unified architectural statement despite being added onto several times. The nearby bandstand shows the square has long served cultural events as well as court business.","narrative":"Washington County Courthouse occupies the middle of the town square in Sandersville, Georgia. Built in 1886 of brick at a cost of $22,000, it is a large High Victorian building whose most striking feature is a five-stage Second Empire clock tower rising from the south corner. Added in 1899 to designs by architect Lewis F. Goodrich, the tower carries pedimented clocks and a gold-colored eagle, and its bell, cast that year, once also served as a fire bell. Other details include a stringcourse between the first and second stories, hipped roof sections, interior chimneys, and both rectangular and round-arched windows. A renovation in 1970-73 cost $153,000, and the interior has since been altered with paneling and lowered ceilings. The building was recognized as a good example of architectural evolution across the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, holding together as a unified composition despite several additions. A nearby bandstand, now used as offices, shows the square's role as a community gathering place.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; contractors Grant, Brantley & J.
