The same contractor, James Smith of Sparta, worked on both buildings. It is a Second Empire courthouse that has stayed in county use and kept much of its exterior character.","narrative":"Walton County's courthouse sits on a two-acre block in the center of Monroe, Georgia. Built in 1883-84 at a cost of $23,865, it was designed by Bruce & Morgan and constructed by contractor James Smith. The Second Empire building has a mansard roof, an Italianate bracketed cornice, and segmental and round-arched windows with banded stone lintels. A five-bay center pavilion projects forward, fronted by a porch with wooden columns. The original ornate domed clock tower blew down in a storm and was replaced in 1910 by a simpler tower with pedimented clocks. The interior has been altered, including a lowered courtroom ceiling and an enclosed balcony, but pedestal jurors' chairs of woven cane remain. Repairs and a heating system were added in 1933, with more remodeling in 1976. The courthouse is significant for its link to the architects Bruce and Morgan, whose plan closely resembles that of the 1883 Hancock County Courthouse built by the same contractor.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Bruce & Morgan (architects); James Smith (contractor)","architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition; owned and maintained by the county, with remodeling in 1933 and 1976 and a 1962 conversion of the clock to electricity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.44634-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80001256.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001256/b5f8324dd1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001256/b5f8324dd1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rheave","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walton_County_Courthouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rheave</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walton_County_Courthouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"83003619","name":"Monroe Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/monroe-commercial-historic-district-83003619/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206684","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walton_County_Courthouse_(Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55637368"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/walton-county/walton-county-courthouse-80001256/"}
