It was built around 1861-65 for Thomas D. Speer.","why_significant":"The nomination argues Liberty Hall is a good example of Southern Greek Revival architecture in the Americus area. It also represents a typical self-sufficient Sumter County plantation that has stayed intact and under cultivation, held by the Simpson family since 1874. The surviving outbuildings show the kinds of agricultural production carried out there.","narrative":"Liberty Hall is a two-story frame plantation house south of Americus in Sumter County, Georgia, set among trees and surrounded by cultivated and wooded land. Measuring fifty by thirty-six feet, it has a hipped roof, a four-column pine portico, shuttered windows and a central hall with double rooms on both floors. A kitchen was added about 1888. Thomas D. Speer, a well-known local farmer, established the plantation before the Civil War, once holding more than 3,000 acres. In 1874 three land lots totaling 607 acres, including the house, were sold to Thomas Simpson, and the Simpson family still holds them. Cotton, corn, molasses, wheat, orchards and even irrigated rice were produced here, and fourteen surviving outbuildings reflect that work. The property was recognized for its Greek Revival design and as a representative, intact, self-sufficient plantation that has remained in agricultural use for over a century. A modern state highway crosses the property as an intrusion.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific dates 1861-65)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence and working farm; about one third of the land is rent farmed (peanuts, cotton, corn, soybeans).
