It keeps its cruciform first-floor plan and the pressed-metal ceiling in the second-floor courtroom. As a repository of marriage, will and land records, it also chronicles the county and is a focal point of civic life.","narrative":"Built in 1923 on the courthouse square in downtown Lumpkin, the Stewart County Courthouse is a two-story brick building with a square plan, cubical mass and truncated hip roof. Identical pedimented porticoes with four Tuscan columns each project from the front and rear. Contrasting corner quoins, flat window arches, paired windows and a modillioned cornice enliven the brick walls, and a clock-bearing cupola sits above the front portico, though it is not original. Inside, the rooms follow a cruciform plan, and the second-floor courtroom keeps its pressed-metal ceiling. The building replaced an 1895 courthouse that burned in 1922. It was listed as an example of the Neoclassical style widely used for Georgia courthouses in the early twentieth century. It also holds the county's records of marriages, wills and land transactions, which makes it a focal point in the life of local residents. The nomination covers a three-acre square.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neoclassical","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked as good. The cupola and clock on the front portico are not original, and the original cupola and clock tower have been lost. The courthouse is still the county's courthouse.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.264868-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80001234.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001234/ffe5277551-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001234/ffe5277551-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Robbie Honerkamp","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stewart_County_Courthouse_in_Lumpkin,_Georgia,_USA,_July_2008.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Robbie Honerkamp</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stewart_County_Courthouse_in_Lumpkin,_Georgia,_USA,_July_2008.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"82002473","name":"Lumpkin Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/lumpkin-commercial-historic-district-82002473/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206602","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stewart_County_Courthouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55634015"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/stewart-county/stewart-county-courthouse-80001234/"}
