It is also one of the few courthouses from the early 1880s still in use. Its site overlooking the town square makes it an architectural focal point for Covington.","narrative":"Newton County's courthouse occupies a corner facing the town square in Covington, Georgia. Completed in 1884 to designs by the architects Bruce and Morgan, with James Smith of Sparta as contractor, it is built of brick with stone trim in the Second Empire style. The asymmetric facade is anchored by a southeast clock tower that rises in four stages to pedimented clocks and a dome. A shorter pavilion with a dormered mansard roof balances it, and between them a recessed porch framed by paired Romanesque arches marks the main entrance. A bracketed cornice runs around the building, and the windows have segmental or round arches with stone trim. The interior has been renovated with acoustical tile, paneling and carpet. The courthouse is one of roughly six in Georgia built in or with details of the Second Empire style, and one of few from the early 1880s still serving its original purpose. It serves as the visual focus of the town square.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Bruce and Morgan (architects); James Smith of Sparta, Ga.
