W. Page Corp. to house the city's two daily newspapers, The Columbus Enquirer and The Columbus Ledger. The Enquirer dates to 1828 and the Ledger to 1886. It was the first structure in Columbus used exclusively for publishing. Built on a sloping lot, it rises two stories at the east end and three at the west, with a steel frame, stucco over brick walls and terra cotta detailing. Carved terra cotta panels recall Louis Sullivan, shell-capped pilasters divide the eight-bay facade, and an octagonal bell tower marks the east pavilion. The local architect designed it after touring California and Florida, and it is regarded as the city's finest Mediterranean building. Both newspapers are Pulitzer Prize winners. A rear addition was designed by the original architect, James J. W. Biggers Sr., and the building's integrity remains intact.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Smith and Biggers, Architects (of Columbus)","architectural_style":"Mediterranean","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as offices for both Columbus daily newspapers; integrity described as intact, with a rear addition designed by the original architect.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.227134-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80001183.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001183/043adc6e38-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001183/043adc6e38-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ledger-Enquirer_Building_b.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ledger-Enquirer_Building_b.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206496","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134427355"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/muscogee-county/ledger-enquirer-building-80001183/"}
