It is significant for architecture because of its extensive outset and inset brickwork and corbelled brick, making it an excellent example of turn-of-the-century commercial building in Columbus.","narrative":"Located in downtown Columbus, Georgia, this two-story brick commercial building at 22 W. 10th Street dates to about 1900-1902. It has a rectangular plan, a flat composition roof and stretcher bond brickwork. The ground floor holds two shop entrances, and the upper floor has five evenly spaced two-over-two sash windows separated by pilasters that appear to support corbelled brick modillions along the parapet. Inset brick panels and a heavily corbelled cornice complete the facade, and most openings are elliptical arches with radiating voussoirs. Inside, the building contains two separate store areas. Insurance maps from 1889 and 1895 show a frame dwelling and later a frame stable on the site, so the present building replaced them. City directories place the Cole-Hatcher-Hampton wholesale grocery firm here in 1902 through 1906, followed by a hardware company by 1908 and a wholesale meat firm in 1910. It is valued locally as a fine example of turn-of-the-century commercial brickwork and for its place in the city's commercial history.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian, commercial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Current use is commercial property; condition described as fair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.927127-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80001154.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206440","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134401522"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/muscogee-county/cole-hatcher-hampton-wholesale-grocers-80001154/"}
