It was originally occupied by Carter and Bradley, cotton factors and warehousemen.","why_significant":"The warehouses are significant for housing the W.C. Bradley Company, one of Columbus' largest industries, for nearly 100 years. They are also considered a fine example of late Victorian warehouse construction, with functional buildings enhanced by ornamental brickwork on window lintels and parapets.","narrative":"Along Front Avenue in Columbus, Georgia, a row of two-story brick warehouses recalls the city's cotton trade. Union troops destroyed the original cotton warehouses on these two blocks on April 17, 1865, in a fire that consumed between 50,000 and 100,000 bales of cotton. The buildings were rebuilt in the late 1860s and expanded in later decades, with additions dating from about 1870 to 1930. Paired arched windows with brick hood moulding, arched doors, a raised central parapet pediment and simple brick patterns along the roofline give the structures their late Victorian character. A south wing has a gallery with five wide arched openings. The W.C. Bradley Company began in a section of the complex in 1883 and eventually came to own both blocks. It became one of the city's largest industries, and the warehouses continue to store cotton, with some interior space converted to offices. Original company advertising graphics survive on the Bay Avenue side.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Industrial-Commercial; late Victorian warehouse construction with Second Empire type windows","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as cotton warehouses, with some interior space converted to offices; described as well maintained and surrounded by commercial, industrial and warehouse uses.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.108882-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80001148.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001148/c1f3c40406-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001148/c1f3c40406-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jet Lowe","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:W._C._Bradley_Company,_Front_Avenue,_Columbus_(Muscogee_County,_Georgia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jet Lowe</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:W._C._Bradley_Company,_Front_Avenue,_Columbus_(Muscogee_County,_Georgia).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206428","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134401004"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/muscogee-county/carter-and-bradley-cotton-factors-and-warehouseman-80001148/"}
