I. Struppa as a private dwelling and given a brick facade in 1928.","why_significant":"The form argues the house is significant in architecture because it shows changing styles, with a late Victorian frame house modernized in 1928 with Georgian, Italianate, classical revival and Prairie School details. It is significant in local history as the home of lumber businessman Thomas Usher Butts, in the once-elite High Uptown neighborhood.","narrative":"Built in 1896 for W. I. Struppa, a purser, this two-story house at 1214 3rd Avenue in Columbus began as a late Victorian frame dwelling. Dr. J. M. Cook bought it in 1904, and in 1908 it passed to Thomas Usher Butts, a Hancock County native who came to Columbus in 1893 and ran the Georgia Lumber Company, a wholesale concern, as well as Butts Lumber Company, a retail business in Phenix City, Alabama. His descendants lived there until 1959. In 1928 the house was covered in brick and given a clay tile hipped roof, wide eaves with modillions, corner quoins, keystones and a neo-classical entrance porch. The result mixes Georgian, Italianate, classical revival and Prairie School elements, which is why it is regarded as an excellent example of eclectic design in downtown Columbus. It once stood in the elite High Uptown neighborhood, now largely commercial. A rear two-story garage with servants' quarters survives, and the house was vacant and in fair condition when surveyed.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Eclectic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and in fair condition; the surrounding area of c. 1890 residences has become commercial.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.107875-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80001146.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001146/8f0d03d759-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001146/8f0d03d759-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_V._Butts_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thomas_V._Butts_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206424","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_U._Butts_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85809302"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/muscogee-county/butts-thomas-v-house-80001146/"}
