It is also significant for local history because it was apparently built for Ethelred Philips, president of Bush-Philips Hardware, in the once-elite High Uptown neighborhood.","narrative":"Built around 1912 in what was once Columbus's elite High Uptown neighborhood, this two-story Neo-Georgian house at 1400 3rd Avenue was probably built for Ethelred Philips, president of Bush-Philips Hardware, a wholesale and retail hardware business. The brick house has an irregular plan with a central pavilion, a slate roof with a truncated hip and gable form, sandstone foundation and water table, and a one-story porch with broad square brick columns and a balustraded parapet. Flat arch lintels with alternating sandstone and brick voussoirs top the windows, and the boxed eaves carry corbelled brickwork and modillions. Inside, a central hall divides four rooms upstairs and four downstairs. City directories show the Philips family living here through 1923, followed by two couples, one with a cashier at Swift Manufacturing Company and the other with an advertising employee of the Columbus Ledger. The house is noted locally as a representative example of Neo-Georgian homes built by wealthy residents between about 1910 and 1920.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neo-Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as a boarding house in current use; described as in fair condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.848096-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80001132.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001132/2ca77afd5c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001132/2ca77afd5c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1400_3rd_Avenue.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1400_3rd_Avenue.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04000669","name":"High Uptown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/high-uptown-historic-district-04000669/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206396","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134399972"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/muscogee-county/building-at-1400-third-avenue-80001132/"}
