It is also significant as the home of Eugene R. Barber, a prominent Valdosta businessman and inventor. Interior mechanical features, a baseboard vacuum system and a lift, add to its interest.","narrative":"Built in 1915 at 416 North Ashley Street in Valdosta, this two-story Neo-classical house was designed by Lloyd Barton Greer, a south Georgia architect trained at Georgia Tech and in the Atlanta firm of George C. Thompson. The east front has a gabled portico with six Ionic columns, and a porte-cochere with a second-story room on brick piers sits on the south side. Inside, dark-wood wainscoting and ceiling detailing mark the first floor, and a baseboard vacuum system and a mechanical lift remain intact. The house was the home of Eugene R. Barber, who ran the Valdosta Bottling Works, was an early Coca-Cola bottler, and held patents for cotton gin and bottling improvements. His daughter later inherited the house and willed it to the City of Valdosta. At the time of listing it was vacant, and plans called for its restoration as a community center.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific date 1915)","architect_builder":"Lloyd Barton Greer (1885-1952)","architectural_style":"Neo-classical","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and vacant, in fair condition, with work in progress.
