W. F. Denny, a Louisville native, designed it and F. P. Heifner was the contractor. The neo-classical building has a cross plan, a projecting Ionic tetrastyle entrance with a pediment and bull's-eye window, brick quoins on the corner pavilions, and a central clock tower with hooded clocks and a ribbed dome. Inside, a wide staircase leads to a second-floor courtroom, reached past an unexpected skylight. The courtroom has Ionic pilasters, keystoned windows and beaded board wainscoting, and has been remodeled with new benches and recessed lighting. The courthouse stands on the site of the early capital of Georgia. Workers digging the foundation found old brick and timbers that revealed the outline of the Old State House. It was dedicated on November 1, 1904, and it is the only courthouse in Georgia attributed to Denny, who died in 1905 at age 42. The building was partially burned in 1938.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"W. F. Denny (architect/builder); F. P.
