W. Thomas, with a Neo-Classical clock tower added in 1906.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the first courthouses built after the Civil War that is still in use and whose plan has not been drastically altered. It is described as an excellent example of an evolving structure, growing from a plain cross-plan building through later additions. It also represents an early work by architect William Winstead Thomas.","narrative":"Jackson County's courthouse in Jefferson, Georgia, is a two-story brick building completed in 1879 at a cost of $11,122. W. W. Thomas served as architect and builder, and M. B. McGinty was the contractor. The original design was plain and sturdy, laid out on a cross plan. A Neo-Classical clock tower and a furnace were added in 1906, rear additions followed, and one arm of the cross was enclosed for offices. Interior renovations in 1978 preserved a pressed metal courtroom ceiling in a cathedral quilt pattern, an egg and dart cornice, brass ceiling fans and the old paneled judge's bench. Painted white, the building has bracketed eaves and a balcony over a segmentally arched entry portico. It was recognized as one of the earliest post-Civil War courthouses still in use with its plan largely intact. Its architect, William Winstead Thomas of Athens, also designed the Oconee County Courthouse and White Hall.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect/builder W. W.
