A supporting letter calls it an excellent example of a massive Victorian eclectic monument and the symbol of county government since 1906. The square has held courthouses since the 1790s.","narrative":"Franklin County's courthouse occupies a two-acre square in the center of Carnesville, on the highest ground in town. Completed in 1906, it is a cream brick building with stone trim, laid out on a cross plan. Four projecting porticoes with colossal Doric columns, full entablatures and pediments mark its faces, and a domed clock tower with clocks facing four directions rises from the center. Plans are credited to W. Chamberlain & Co. of Knoxville, Tennessee, with M. T. Lewman & Co. of Louisville, Kentucky, as contractor. The same architectural firm also built the Berrien County Courthouse in Nashville, Georgia. Inside, the finish is modest, with wood paneling over plaster walls and acoustical tile ceilings, and the form notes a need for repair. A county letter reports that the only exterior change was removal of a small second-floor balcony for safety reasons. The square has hosted courthouses since the 1790s and holds a Confederate monument that faces the building. The courthouse serves as a local landmark and the seat of county government.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"W. Chamberlain & Co. (architect/builder); M. T.
