Alexander Blair designed it and Nicholas Ittner served as contractor. The brick building with stone trim has a projecting Corinthian portico topped by a pediment with a cartouche, a hipped roof with a balustrade and urn finials, and square and round-arched windows. A corner clock tower rises to an octagonal domed cupola with a bell lantern. The clock, bought from the E. Howard Clock Company, has an illuminated dial and a 1,200-pound bell. Inside, the courtroom retains four mantels, original louvered blinds, beaded board wainscoting and an old wooden bench, though the pressed metal ceiling was lowered. The courthouse is significant because Blair's Classical facade with a campanile was used again at the Turner County Courthouse in 1907, and these are the only two such adaptations among Georgia's surviving courthouses. Both contain E. Howard tower clocks.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Alexander Blair (architect); Nicholas Ittner (contractor)","architectural_style":"Classical facade with campanile","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked good; the building was renovated in 1978-79.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.30785-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80001011.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001011/0693b7825a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80001011/0693b7825a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Michael Rivera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Decatur_County_Courthouse_(NW_corner).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Rivera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Decatur_County_Courthouse_(NW_corner).JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"87001907","name":"Bainbridge Residential Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/bainbridge-residential-historic-district-87001907/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93205964","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decatur_County_Courthouse_(Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16973385"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/decatur-county/decatur-county-courthouse-80001011/"}
