Its grounds are significant as well-preserved late-nineteenth-century landscaping. It is also tied to Henry Gray Turner, a soldier, lawyer, congressman and briefly a Georgia Supreme Court justice.","narrative":"Built around 1895 on the southeast edge of Quitman, Georgia, this two-story frame house follows a traditional Southern plan of four rooms over four around a central stair hall. Its hipped roof, hipped dormers, wraparound porch, shingled balcony and bay windows blend Neoclassical and Victorian motifs. Signed blueprints found in the attic show the plans came from Munn and Company, a New York publisher of Scientific American, making the house one of very few documented mail-order designs in Georgia. About twenty acres of grounds keep the period arrangement of a landscaped front yard with a gravel drive and a working rear yard, along with a carriage house and other outbuildings. The house was home to Henry Gray Turner, a Confederate officer, lawyer, state legislator, U.S. congressman from 1881 to 1896, and briefly a Georgia Supreme Court justice. Restoration was underway when the property was recognized.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date ca. 1895)","architect_builder":"Munn and Company, New York City","architectural_style":"Late Victorian, combining Neoclassical and other eclectic motifs","criteria":[],"status_note":"Under restoration at the time of nomination; the owners planned to occupy it as their primary residence once work was complete.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.498427-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/80000977.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000977/7073f6b006-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000977/7073f6b006-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Dfj1200","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nocturne_-_Big_House_Facade.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dfj1200</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nocturne_-_Big_House_Facade.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207131","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Gray_Turner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16995191"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/brooks-county/turner-henry-gray-house-and-grounds-80000977/"}
