It was part of Judge Samuel F. Leib's estate and sits with the remnant of the Leib garden.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is architecturally exceptional, a rare California example of the East Coast Shingle Style with Queen Anne influence. It was once one of the finest carriage houses in the San Jose area and is now one of the few left. It is also tied to Judge Leib, a prominent jurist, banker and pioneer orchardist, whose surviving garden is included.","narrative":"Built around 1899 to replace an earlier structure that burned, this carriage house at 60 North Keeble Avenue in San Jose once served the estate of Judge Samuel F. Leib, a lawyer, banker and judge. The wooden building rises one and a half stories under a steep roof, with a T-shaped plan and a sweeping porch overhang. Its walls combine V-grooved siding with redwood shingles, carved decorative bands, multi-paned windows and a sunburst motif on the porch posts. One-story additions date from about 1949. The design recalls the East Coast Shingle Style, which is unusual in California, and shows Queen Anne influence. When new it ranked among the area's most outstanding carriage houses, and it is now one of the few that remain in the city. The listing also covers the surviving garden, a remnant of a larger formal landscape. Leib was a pioneer walnut and prune grower who knew Luther Burbank, and several original plantings remain.","period_of_significance":"circa 1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"East Coast Shingle Style with Queen Anne influence","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; altered with 1949 additions and later changes. The surrounding area is zoned commercial/professional, and the garden was being cleared of overgrowth for restoration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:32.186025-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/80000866.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000866/867bf090f9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000866/867bf090f9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leib_Carriage_House,_60_N._Keeble_Ave.,_San_Jose,_CA_9-30-2012_1-28-27_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leib_Carriage_House,_60_N._Keeble_Ave.,_San_Jose,_CA_9-30-2012_1-28-27_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861724","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leib_Carriage_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16911331"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-clara-county/leib-carriage-house-80000866/"}
